Outcomes

T

Results from hip arthroscopy depend to a large extent on what the underlying problem is, how bad the damage was, and what was done. Outcomes are therefore variable. Overall however, 70-80% of people are significantly improved after surgery, although this may take several months to achieve. High level athletes can take up to 6 months to get back to sport, and people probably improve for at least a year after surgery.

Approximately 1 in 20 patients go on to need a second surgery within the next couple of years, either due to ongoing symptoms, or new changes in the hip joint.

Complications are uncommon, as is detailed above, but there are always cases from any surgical procedure where symptoms are not improved enough after surgery, and other options are then considered.

Prior to your surgery, you will be emailed a link to a scoring form, which asks a number of questions about your hip symptoms. See Scoring form here  .

This allows us to generate an overall numerical score related to your hip symptoms. The same link will then be emailed to you at certain timepoints after surgery, allowing us to follow your hip symptoms and helping to assess the outcome of surgery over time. The number itself is less important than the trend over time.
